January 23

1971 (Jan 23) - 'My Sweet Lord' Becomes First 'Solo Beatle' #1


George Harrison became the first solo Beatle to have a No.1 when ‘ ‘My Sweet Lord’ went to the top of the UK single charts.  The song from his ‘All Things Must Pass’ album stayed at No.1 for five weeks.  The track returned to the top of the UK charts in 2002, following his death.

2008 (Feb 20) - Beatles' Autographed Rolling Stones Album Auctioned

A 1976 Rolling Stones album bought for £2 at a car boot sale sold for £4,000 at an auction. The ‘Black and Blue’ LP was signed by John Lennon, Yoko Ono, Paul and Linda McCartney and George Harrison as well as members of the Rolling Stones. The seller obtained the album after haggling the cost down from £3.

January 24

1958 (Jan 24) - Quarrymen Perform at the Cavern Club


The Quarry Men performed at The Cavern Club in Liverpool.  It was three years later when they appeared again at the Cavern but under their new name ‘The Beatles’.

1962 (Jan 24) - Beatles Sign Management Deal with Brian Epstein


Brian Epstein signed a management deal with The Beatles.  Epstein would receive 25 per cent of the bands gross earnings.  The normal management deal was 10 per cent.

1962 (Jun 6) - First Beatles Recordings at What Will Become 'Abbey Road'

The first Beatles recording session took place at EMI studios. The group recorded four tracks, one of which was ‘Love Me Do’ the four musicians received payments for the session of £7.10 ($12.07) each.

1966 (Feb 18) - Brian Wilson Finishes 'Good Vibrations'

Beach Boy Brian Wilson finished recording the future classic song ‘Good Vibrations’, which went on to become the band’s third US number-one hit. As a child, his mother told him that dogs could pick up “vibrations” from people, so that the dog would bark at “bad vibrations” Wilson turned this into the general idea for the song.

1964 (Jan 25) - 'I Want To Hold Your Hand' is Beatles' First US #1


The Beatles score their first No.1 in the US when ‘I Want To Hold Your Hand’ reaches the top of the Cash Box Magazine music chart.  The Fab Four would eventually rack up 25 No.1’s in America.

1965 (Jan 25) - Beatles on Vacation


John & Cynthia join George Martin and his future wife in St Moritz;  George & Patti are in Europe;  Paul and Jane visit Tunisia.
