The Beatles LP Something New is certified gold.

1964 (Aug 24) - Beatles Release 'Matchbox'

The Beatles release “Matchbox” with the B-side “Slow Down” in the US.

1964 (Aug 24) - Brian Epstein Meets 'Colonel' Tom Parker

Taking him up on his telegram invitation to help out in any way he can in America, Beatles manager Brian Epstein meets Elvis Presley manager “Colonel” Tom Parker for the first time when they have lunch at the Beverly Hills Hotel.

1967 (Aug 24) - Maharishi Lectures at the Hilton

John, Cynthia, Paul, Jane, George and Patti attend the Maharishi’s lecture at the Hilton in London.

1969 (Aug 24) - John Lennon 'Cold Turkey'

John Lennon writes, rehearses, and records a song about his recent heroin withdrawal entitled “Cold Turkey,” where he also puts into practice his recent introduction to “primal scream” therapy. Fans and critics are shocked and appalled by the emotionally raw recording, a prelude to his eventual Plastic Ono Band album.

1981 (Aug 24) - Mark David Chapman Sentencing

Mark Chapman was given a 20 year jail sentence for the murder of John Lennon. The 25 year old had shot Lennon five times at close range on December 8th, 1980 in front of The Dakota apartment building in New York City. Over the next few months, Chapman would claim many times to have been beaten by fellow inmates, some of whom allegedly tried to kill him.

1961 (Aug 25) - Beatles Play Mersey Riverboat

After playing a lunchtime gig at The Cavern Club Liverpool, The Beatles played aboard the Merseyside riverboat M.V.Royal Iris supporting Acker Bilk and his Paramount Jazz Band.

1962 (Jun 6) - First Beatles Recordings at What Will Become 'Abbey Road'

The first Beatles recording session took place at EMI studios. The group recorded four tracks, one of which was ‘Love Me Do’ the four musicians received payments for the session of £7.10 ($12.07) each.

1965 (Aug 25) - The Jump From Helicopter To Beatle Pool

Four female Beatles fans hired a helicopter to fly over the house The Beatles were renting in Beverly Hills, California and jumped from the helicopter into the swimming pool.

1966 (Aug 25) - Two Shows In Seattle

During their last US tour, The Beatles played two shows at the Coliseum in Seattle, Washington. The first show at 3pm was attended by only 8,000 fans (the arena seated 15,000), but the evening show was a sell-out.
