2014 (Aug 22) - Mark David Chapman Denied Parole

John Lennon’s killer, 59-year-old Mark David Chapman, was denied parole by New York State officials for the eighth time. In handing down their decision, the parole board said, “Your release would be incompatible with the welfare of society and would so deprecate the serious nature of the crime as to undermine respect for the law.”

1962 (Aug 23) - John Marries Cynthia

John Lennon married Cynthia Powell at Liverpool’s Mount Pleasant register office. He then played a gig that night with The Beatles at Liverpool’s Riverpark Ballroom.

1962 (Jun 6) - First Beatles Recordings at What Will Become 'Abbey Road'

The first Beatles recording session took place at EMI studios. The group recorded four tracks, one of which was ‘Love Me Do’ the four musicians received payments for the session of £7.10 ($12.07) each.

1963 (Aug 23) - 'She Loves You' Released

In the UK, The Beatles release “She Loves You,” which becomes the best-selling UK single of all time, a record that isn’t broken until 1977, when Paul McCartney releases “Mull Of Kintyre.”

1966 (Aug 23) - Beatles #1 in Britain With 'Eleanor Rigby/Yellow Submarine'

The Beatles were at No.1 on the UK singles chart with the double a sided ‘Yellow Submarine – Eleanor Rigby’. The group’s eleventh No.1. Paul McCartney said he came up with the name Eleanor from actress Eleanor Bron, who had starred with The Beatles in the film Help! Rigby came from the name of a store in Bristol, Rigby & Evens Ltd, Wine & Spirit Shippers.

1966 (Aug 23) - Beatles Play Shea Stadium on Final US Tour

On their final tour of America, The Beatles performed at Shea Stadium in New York City, New York. Unlike the previous year’s performance, which had sold out, there were 11,000 empty seats in the 55,600 seat stadium. The Beatles earn more than the previous year, receiving $189,000 for their performance.

1966 (Feb 18) - Brian Wilson Finishes 'Good Vibrations'

Beach Boy Brian Wilson finished recording the future classic song ‘Good Vibrations’, which went on to become the band’s third US number-one hit. As a child, his mother told him that dogs could pick up “vibrations” from people, so that the dog would bark at “bad vibrations” Wilson turned this into the general idea for the song.

1968 (Jan 20) - 'Judy In Disguise' is #1. Inspired by 'Lucy In The Sky'?

One Hit Wonders John Fred and the Playboy Band started a two week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with ‘Judy In Disguise, (With Glasses)’. It topped at No.3 in the UK. The song was allegedly inspired by The Beatles ‘Lucy In The Sky’.

1974 (Aug 23) - John Lennon Sees UFO

John Lennon claims to see a UFO from his New York apartment. He describes it as an archetypal flying saucer, surrounded by lights with a red one on top. In his next album, Walls and Bridges, he includes this note in the booklet: “On the 23rd August 1974 at 9 o’clock I saw a U.F.O. – J.L.”
